Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott went to The Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education and also worked at two other job. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. It was impossible to realize the dream after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. At a Roots show, she revealed herself as a musician. After that, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to gain experiences on the stage, as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway the musical Rent. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
